Alarm Clock/Bedpost -MAWD-

Postby Zip Lock » Thu Oct 04, 2007 10:08 pm

-MAWD- (modification modded)

Origine-
So I had to find a way to place my rear 5.1 speakers behind me and behind me there is my bed. Did some thinking and can up with some solutions, the first one was to have pipes extending my bed post to mount the speakers. It ended up that the inside diameter of my bedposts were exactly 1.5" (except for a little groove that my dremel took care of). The pipes fitted so well that I couldn't stop thinking of other thing I could mount, more speakers, lights, fans, LCD screens, projector, keyboard, mouse, USB ports and alarm clock. The last one seemed to be the one in budget.

Inspiration
One of the greatest DIY home inventor phenomenon, Wallace, from Wallace & Gromit. In the short movie A Close Shave, Wallace has an awesome morning system. I tried to find a picture or a clip of it, but I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvWAxH3EQus

The work
I dont like to stop working, so I decided to make it on a day off. Starting at 11:30am and finishing at 3:30am.

Image
1- The old switches, I made a little diagram of it, then tossed it out.
2- There was a little diagram thing saying 24hrs, but the clock was in pm-am, I connected the dots, but it did not work.
3- The old busted VCR pays off.
4- My version of the switches, test run, works great.

Image
5- 1.5" to 2", 2 inch pipe with holes for switches, 90deg elbow to thread on cap.
6- Holes for the LED display (I think its called an LED display) and sanded for painting.
7- Holes for the alarm speaker to bug me for mornings to come.
8- Popping in the switches and its painted.
9- Hollow threaded rode for the lamp.

Image
10- Bulb socket, I really enjoy how I made that.
11- Switches in place, from left to right: Time, Hour, Minute, Snooze, Alarm On/Off, BOOT COMPUTER! and light on/off
12- Supper, dam that sauce is good in soup.
13- Soldering in the switches to the circuit.

Image
14- The screen with its new wires, in Grey-white-black-red order to prevent mistakes.
15- The wires on the circuit in the same fashion, im happy i went with 2" insteda of 1.5".
16- Test run, everything works, very happy, notice the 9v bat clip.
17- Finished, even energy to make a Tux lamp shade.

Image
Its 3:24, but im done AND it works.

Image
the light, under exposed

Image
looks like it came with the bed.

well thats all,
I will be putting something on top of the push buttons, when I know what.
Next: customizing my desk and finshing my 14 shot disposable camera strobe. :)

Holy f'n shit Zip! This is awesome work! I'm pretty floored...

I love the play-by-play layout of this post...Very instructive.

How's it holding up, btw?

Are you planning on doing something else with the diplay? I like it as is...

Did you screen the penguin print?

What's your soup, btw? Looks pretty good... I'm guessing homemade cream of brocc.

Oh, that explains it. I'm at work, and flickr is blocked. But that's easy enough to rectify, since I'm the admin...
