Come all ye comic book collectors, RPG'ers, bike-tivists, computer nerds, crafty folk, cinema buffs, bookworms, mad scientists, manga fanatics and all of your manifold ilk. Montreal is a fine city with a growing geek community and Geek Montreal endeavours to provide it with a venue for the fruitful multiplication of all things geeky. As an online community, Geek Montreal features an events calendar, a listing of interest-specific resources and a bulletin board. As a physical community, Geek Montreal is a variety of projects, initiatives and relationships spearheaded by various folks.
Current Projects:
We've got different projects on the go. Geek Montreal is a loose gathering of folks who develop solo or joint initiatives and who use Geek Montreal as a means of promoting their projects and to connect with like-minded misfits. All projects are for free and for fun. I If you want to tie in to something we're currently doing or if you want to do something under the Geek Montreal banner, get in touch.
Geek OUT!
The Geek OUT! (sorta monthly) event currently happens at Burritoville, on Bishop Street in Montreal. We try and showcase a wide variety of games. Invited guests have included: indie comic artist Salgood Sam, ManMan writer/artist duo Matt Shepherd and James Duncan, the Montreal Graffiti Research Lab crew and the folks behind the Our Parliement project. More pics.
Geek Montreal TV / Michael's Basement Review
Is an ongoing, straight-to-youtube series of episodes of different events and a regular feature during which Mike reviews comic books and generally acts up. Episodes are all displayed in the collumn to your right.
Geek Montreal Podcast
The podcast started up as a project led by Ossie and Laura and we've had one episode so far. The grapefruit is currently gathering submissions for more episodes.
TV-be-gone tourneys
We love TV-be-gones. They're an awesome way to empower ourselves and to challenge the increasing impact which TV screens are having in public spaces. Once you've gotten or built yourself a TV-be-gone, check the bulletin board for the grapefruit's scoresheet.
TheLovecraft Project
Some of us love early 1900s horror writter HP Lovecraft. This project has us looking at all the physical sites featured in his fiction. We're building the site right now, more news TBA.
Fly wear
We've got clothing stamped with the awesome Geek Montreal logo using both emulsion silkscreening and acetate stenciling. We've done everything from t-shirts to lab coats and patches. Also 1" buttons. If you want some, contact cleverdick.
Connecting with all our buds out there
Once in awhile, we'll launch a delegation to go connect with folks out there. So far, we've made it out to the UNB Robotics Competition in NB, the Hackers on Planet Earth Conference in NYC and (twice!) to Geek Week in Vermont.
